Match Report

Sunday 12 May –v- Centaurs at Civil Service, Eltham
Still smarting from our opening days humiliation, there appeared a strong air of pessimism amongst our jolly ensemble, perhaps far too many of whom could recall to clearly our rather poor showing in the corresponding fixture of last year. The events that followed are dedicated to Andy Paul in the hope that a once so promising career can be reborn from the tragic incidents that appear to have robbed us of such a dynamic asset. The inclusion of Softy offered little in the way of encouragement to a side that was asking 'Why the hell are we playing this team again! The fact that he was still 'stiff' from yesterday (must have seen a young chickens botty) and that Daz had put his neck out climbing out of bed, meant that devastating pace duo of Martin and Whale set about dismantling the oppos defences. Centaurs preset plan apparently was to really piss the oppo skip off, which within five overs they had wholly succeeded in doing, with a melee of heave-ho’s and hoicks to cow corner. Steve was having rather more success at the other end and while the skip took up a familiar sulking-hands-on-hips pose, he managed to move both openers. With Jim bowling economically, -in other words - too wide to hit- and Steve keeping it tight with the assistance of excellent fielding, Centaurs at last experienced difficulty in scoring runs. Jim achieved his first breakthrough of the season, through athletic fielding by Darkie which involved the simple equation of catch the ball or lose your dangly bits. Neither solution would have been of great loss to mankind!! GT bowled almost as badly as Spud, which left Steve as the principal architect in restricting Centaurs to 170-9, with a career best return of 7-78. During a non-existent tea interval, Spud cajoled Limp into opening and solved the other nagging problem, of where to let Gordon waste our time by putting him in first to get it over and done with. Gordon, as reliable as ever, was back with us within three balls, after his fanciful and flamboyant Guyanese Cut once again proved a sad let down. Thence onward the vociferous crowd were treated to a display of masterful batting, as first Daz and latterly Mr Whippy took the bowling to task. With GT intent to play the anchor role Danglers raced to sixty-five (four hours I think !) before the spectators had chance to draw breath and acknowledge his fifty. After a few had been awoken by the generous acclaim of the gathering, Timms received a far more generous hand as bludgeoned his way to a half century. In an-effort to halt the onslaught, Centaurs introduced nine bowlers, but to no avail - it was clear from the pavilion that they had really got the arse!!!! Equally clear was the immense satisfaction that proceedings were giving the skipper. At 168 for 1 there was aglow of quiet confidence, that even the disaster of a lost wicket would not deny us victory. As Daz hit the winning runs it was a great advertisement for sport with the way Centaurs warmly accepted defeat and Spud took great pleasure in shaking their skip’s hand and saying what a super game it was ... and all that. We retired to the bar and drank the jugs that we had, while noting that the Centaur had all gone. All in all the days play was quite good. Daz and GT’s partnership sent no one in particular scurrying for the record books to confirm a club and 2nd wicket record of 171 unbroken. In the Bull we all talked to Steve Lewis.
Pen Pics
GT -Scored lots bowled like a tart
Daz -Scored lots too much of atart to bowl
Old B -Bowled rather well and read his paper.
Gordon -Was first in the shower
Throng -The rest of us watched, umpired, scored, chased chickens or bowled too bad to deserve special mention. Well fielded by all....no dropped catches.
