Match Report
‘Things can only get better’ claim the lyrics of D:ream – for Captain Charisma Billy Webb this needs to happen sooner rather than later. Crusaders floundered like a rudderless dinghy against a well organised Belvedere side that made the most of the opportunities we presented them. A succession of dropped chances gave the Belvedere openers the chance to make hay and Dandridge (100*) and Burt 46 needed no second invitation. Belvedere declared when the opener had raised three figures, setting Crusaders an unlikely 187 for victory.
With Darkie Paine hospitalised by a face injury, several other players seemed keen to check on his condition after the Belvedere opening bowler had returned Timms and Clark to the pavilion in his first fiery over. Despite some staunch defence from the middle order, marshalled by Webb (22) the chance of victory had evaporated. Steve Cook (14), Gordy Schultz (16) and Jim Clements (25*) all occupied the crease to defer the inevitable, but Belvedere wrapped up victory with time to spare and Crusaders still 70 runs shy.
